National approach to product improvement (NAPV)

Supermarket shelves

The Dutch government has followed up on the earlier Product Composition Improvement Agreement. Since 2022, the new National Approach to Product Improvement (NAPV) has been in force.

This approach should make it easier for consumers to choose healthy food. And to ensure that fewer people are or become overweight and consequently develop chronic diseases.

The food industry has already made steps forward. An important point of attention remains the further reduction of salt, sugar and saturated fat in products.

With the NAPV, the government sets new requirements for products. On the basis of these, food manufacturers are improving the composition of products. The choice of products with less salt, sugar and saturated fat are recommended.
